• Kiwifruit
    Higher more consistent arrival pressures
RYPEN only targets ethylene, this means our products are highly efficient with the ability to moderate ethylene levels over long distances (RYPEN commercial pilot results)
  • Kiwifruit
    All natural with extended shelf-life
RYPEN captures ethylene, without altering the natural make-up of the fruit (RYPEN commercial pilot results).
  • Kiwifruit
Seize the opportunity to reach new markets
RYPEN enables growers and exporters to ship kiwifruit over longer distances and reach previously out of reach markets (RYPEN commercial pilot results).
  • Leaf

The solution for a wide range of produce packed in cases loose, or in case liners. Providing simple-to-use and highly-effective ethylene moderation in storage and during transit.

Kiwifruit is one of the most sensitive fruits to ethylene, responding to levels of ethylene measured at 5 parts per billion or below. Traditional measures using ethylene control which blocks receptors on fruit reduces the ability of it to naturally and correctly ripen, with a significant percentage never ripening.

This has resulted in many consumers moving away from varieties where this is prevalent. Commercial pilots have shown the RYPEN Bag and Leaf offer an effective alternative to this with ethylene selectively and physically captured, removing the need for toxic alternatives which can potentially stain and contaminate the fruit. It also offers the opportunity to replace options which block ethylene receptors and prevent natural ripening.

  • Kiwifruit is extremely sensitive to ethylene, even at low temperatures and ethylene production is of great importance for long-term storage (Antunes, 2007)

RYPEN commercial pilots have shown that by delaying ripening, shipping range increases significantly. This enables growers and exporters to overcome delays as well as open up new and potentially more lucrative markets.

Kiwifruit, native to China, is primarily grown in New Zealand, Italy, and Chile. New Zealand dominates exports, with its season running from May to November. Italy’s season is November to May, while Chile’s production is March to August.

Key varieties include green Hayward® and yellow SunGold®, JinGold® and Sorelli®. Emerging varieties like red-fleshed types are gaining popularity but are very sensitive with short shelf-life and therefore challenging to export. Major kiwifruit destination export markets include Europe, North America, and Asia, with Japan being a significant importer.

The fruit’s high vitamin content in C, K, B and antioxidants plus it’s unique flavour, have contributed to its global demand growth as the perfect convenient snacking fruit. Key post-harvest challenges are keeping the firmness of the fruit.
